Well-balanced finite volume schemes of arbitrary order of accuracy for shallow water flows

چکیده
Many geophysical flows are merely perturbations of some fundamental equilibrium state. If a numerical scheme shall capture such flows efficiently, it should be able to preserve the unperturbed equilibrium state at the discrete level. Here we present a class of schemes of any desired order of accuracy which preserve the lake at rest perfectly. These schemes should have an impact for studying important classes of lake and ocean flows. AMS subject classification: 65M06, 35L65, 35L67

Well-balanced bicharacteristic-based scheme for multilayer shallow water flows including wet/dry fronts
The aim of this paper is to present a new well-balanced finite volume scheme for two-dimensional multilayer shallow water flows including wet/dry fronts. The ideas, presented here for the two-layer model, can be generalized to a multilayer case in a straightforward way. The method developed here is constructed in the framework of the Finite Volume Evolution Galerkin (FVEG) schemes. The FVEG met...
متن کاملHydrodynamic Instabilities in Well-Balanced Finite Volume Schemes for Frictional Shallow Water Equations. The Kinematic Wave Case
We report the developments of hydrodynamic instabilities in several wellbalanced finite volume schemes that are observed during the computation of the temporal evolution of an out-balance flow which is essentially a kinematic wave. The numerical simulations are based on the one-dimensional shallow-water equations for a uniformly sloping bed with hydraulic resistance. Subsequently, we highlight ...
متن کاملWell-Balanced Central Schemes on Overlapping Cells with Constant Subtraction Techniques for the Saint-Venant Shallow Water System
We develop well-balanced finite-volume central schemes on overlapping cells for the SaintVenant shallow water system and its variants. The main challenge in deriving the schemes is related to the fact that the Saint-Venant system contains a geometric source term due to nonflat bottom topography and therefore a delicate balance between the flux gradients and source terms has to be preserved. We ...
متن کاملComparison of Cell-centered and Node-centered Formulations of a High-resolution Well-balanced Finite Volume Scheme: Application to Shallow Water Flows
We present numerical comparisons for the simulation of unsteady 2D shallow water flows over topography with wet/dry fronts, between well-balanced cell-centered and node-centered formulations of a finite volume high-resolution algorithm. In both formulations we utilize Roe’s Riemann solver, while second-order spatial accuracy is achieved with MUSCL-type reconstruction techniques. Grid refinement...
متن کاملA Fast and Stable Well-Balanced Scheme with Hydrostatic Reconstruction for Shallow Water Flows
We consider the Saint-Venant system for shallow water flows, with nonflat bottom. It is a hyperbolic system of conservation laws that approximately describes various geophysical flows, such as rivers, coastal areas, and oceans when completed with a Coriolis term, or granular flows when completed with friction. Numerical approximate solutions to this system may be generated using conservative fi...
